Using the Bunsen Burner: 24/4

On wednesday we went to the lab and we worked with the bunsen burner. Here is Ceci’s blog, if you want to take a look at it: http://cadem.cumbresblogs.com/

We started an experiment using this method:

  1. Close air-hole
  2. Turn the gas tap and light the burner.
  3. Record the results  ( colour of flame )
  4. Open air hole slowly until it is half-closed open and record results
  5. Open it completely and record results
  6. Place a tripod and gauze on the burner
  7. Place a beaker with 50 ml of water
  8. Heat it with the air hole open
  9. Take the time until the water starts boiling
  10. Change the beaker and water and heat it with the air – hole closed
  11. Take the time until the water boils

Elizabeth Jennings

In literature we are going to analyze a poem called “In Praise of Creation”. The writer is  Elizabeth Jennings. These are our tasks:

Task 1: Write a short biography of the writer

Elizabeth Jennings is a poet,she was born in Boston,Lincolnshire,England

the 18 of july of 1926 and died the 26 of october of 2001. She never got married. When she was 6 years old she moved to Oxford and that’s when she discovered poetry. After attending to Anne’s College,Oxford she became a librarian at Oxford city library. In 1953 she published her first collection of poetry witch called the attention of Robert Conquest, he later published her work with the likes of famous authors. In 1960, Elizabeth was one of the popular poets in England, she published a lot of very popular amount of works.

Task 2: 20thc Literature in England was characterized by 2 important movements: Modernism and Post-modernism.

Main characteistics of Post Modernism:

  • It moves away from absolute truths.
  • The race, the gender and the power are social constructs.
  • Analyzing the effects of a technique rather than just listing techniques in an essay.

Main characteristics of Modernism:

  • Radical disruption of linear flow or narrative.
  • Modernists explored individual consciousness rather than narrative. The focus was the introspective.
  • Modernists made lenguage a central to artists explorations.
  • Focus on the individual and alientation and confusion.
  • Interested in rythm and fragments of everyday lenguage.
  • Heavy use of the symbolism and setting.

Task 3: Make a list of 5 important differences in your opinion

In modernism they focused in the writer and in the post modernism they focused on the reader.

In postmodernist, literature is open and intertextual, but in  modernism literature is self-contained.

Another main difference is that modernism focused on interiority, but postmodernism focused on exteriority.

In modernism there was Adheres to Western and in post modernism there was the contest western.

They used different types of languages modernism used idiosyncratic  language, but postmodernism uses simple language.

 

Documental: El aguacate, el lado oscuro del superalimento

En geografía vimos un documental sobre el aguacate. Nuestra tarea era volver a ver el video y responder estas preguntas:

a) ¿En donde si sitúa la problemática? ¿Cuáles son sus características ambientales? Busca mapas del sitio y fotos y publícalas en tu blog.

b) ¿De qué recursos naturales se trata? Son renovables o no renovables?

c)¿ Cuál o cuáles son las causas?

d) ¿Quiénes intervienen en esta situación? ¿Qué rol cumple cada uno?

e) ¿Qué consecuencias( sociales-económicas, ambientales) podés observar?

 

a) La problemática se sitúa en Petorca, Chile. Sus características ambientales son de sequía, ya que la mayor parte del  agua se utiliza para regar los aguacates.

b) Se trata del recurso natural el agua y no es renovable.

c) Una causa es que el agua no es un bien común y  la gente tiene que comprarla. Otras causas son las super plantaciones de aguacates.  

d)Los que intervienen esta situación son los activistas. Su rol es acabar con la crisis de agua en Chile. 

e) Las personas que viven en esa zona tienen muy poca agua y como consecuencia no pueden bañarse, lavar los platos, cultivar, etc.

Otra consecuencia es que los agricultores se llevaron una porción de agua del río y la otra parte se secó; Al no haber vapor de agua no se generan nubes y esto significa que no llueve. Esto generó que Petorca se transforme en una zona árida.  

Los animales no tenían el agua suficiente para vivir y como consecuencia murieron un montón de seres vivos.

Parson’s pleasure #2

This is the second set of questions related to the story called “ The parson’s pleasure”:

a) Name the main character in this story and describe his physique and his personality in a paragraph.

b) Characters:  name two other characters mentioned in the story, and give short descriptions.

c) Write a dialogue between Boggis and Rummins when he returns to find that the legs have been sawn off.

 

a)The main character is Cyril Winnington Boggis. He is a furniture dealer. He is a cheater, he lied to a lot of people. He is a scammer, a fraud and a manipulator. He made people believe something that wasn’t true to take advantage of them.

*  I did not find any information to describe him physically.

b)

Rummins is the owner of a farm and he is a stumpy man with small shifty eyes.

Claude is Rummins’ neighbour. He is short and has broad shoulders.

c)Dialogue:

Mr. Boggis: What the heck happened to the armchair?

Rummins: We thought you only wanted the legs.

Mr. Boggis: Nooo, I could have won a lot of money  by selling that chair.

Rummins: Wait! you told us that it was worth nothing! You are a liar!  

Mr. Boggis: I am not, I am just a businessman, you silly!

Rummins: Get out of my sight before you regret!  

 

The Parson´s Pleasure

In language we have been reading and analyzing a short story called “The Parson’s Pleasure”. These are some questions that we had to answer about the story:

  • Why did Mr Boggis disguise himself in the uniform of a clergyman?

Mr Boggis disguised himself in the uniform of a clergyman because he didn’t want people to know that he was a furniture dealer. So he could get stuff for a cheaper price.

  • What methods did Mr Boggis use to get into people’s homes?

He used different methods to get into people’s homes, for example he used a card that said: Reverend Cyril Winnington Boggis, the President of the Society for the Preservation of Rare Furniture, in association with The Victoria & Albert Museum. He did this so people thought he was an important person (but he wasn’t). Another method he used was saying that his car was overheated and he needed a  jar of water.

  • How did Rummins, Claud and Bert behave when they saw Mr Boggis? Why?

At the beginning Rummins, Claud and Bert behaved in a very suspicious way, because it was very weird that a parson stopped by their house.

  • Why did Mr Boggis say that he was only interested in the legs?

Mr Boggis said that he was only interested in the legs of the commode because he wanted Rummins, Claud and Bert to believe what he said, so he could buy it in a cheaper price and sell it for much more money.

  • Why did Rummins, Claud and Bert saw off the legs of the chest of drawers?

Rummins, Claud and Bert saw off the legs of the chest of drawers because they believed that he was a parson and parsons don’t usually have big cars. They thought they were doing him a favor, so that he wouldn’t have to cut them at his house.

In biology we worked on the 5 kingdoms classification and we made a comparative table. First, we did all together a chart of vertebrates and our activity was to make another chart with information about invertebrates. Here I am posting my work:

Cells

This is what I did:

Ideas:

-There are many types of cells

-Cells have different shapes and different functions

-Animal cells and plant cells have some parts of their organism in common

-Every living being is made of cells

-Cells are the main reason that we are alive

-Plant cells have some differences between the animal cells, for example the cell wall. Only the plant cells have the cell wall.

 

2 questions:

-What is the difference between an unspecialized cell and a specialized cell?

-What is the difference between a cell membrane and a cell wall?

 

Metaphor:

-The nucleus is the brain of a cell

-Cell are like cars,  because all the cells work together so that our body works correctly
